Jessie Jackson was in Jacksonville in 2018, I was the photographer on task, I did not think her remembered me, but he did, he was walking to his van, he said “Tonya picture lady!” You not going to take my picture? Hurry up it’s hot!
That was a really beautiful story, Khalilah. I appreciate the way you included Chrmn. Fred, who would be pleased with the way Rev. Jackson took the original Rainbow Coalition that the Black Panther Party created on to its next iteration, after his murder.
“In 1984 he stood at the podium in San Francisco and called his coalition of the locked out, the left behind, the refused and the uncounted: Rainbow.” This gave me full-body chills.
Khalilah, you get me every time. You pull me deep into your world, which becomes my world as a shared experience which awakenes something somewhere deep down in my DNA. I experience your experience as mine, because of your talent of painting the most vivid and visceral picture...it's like looking through the looking glass of our people's soul. So thank you. I am embarrassed to realize that I didn't know that Freddie Hampton and MLK Jr. were walking around breathing the same unjust air..but you brought that light, awareness. I'm always learning from you.
A beautiful, heartwarming story!!
Strong, Brilliant, Beautiful! Thank you!
